About the Australian Government’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT)

The role of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) is to advance the interests of Australia and Australians internationally. This involves strengthening Australia’s security, enhancing Australia’s prosperity, delivering an effective and high quality overseas aid program and helping Australian travellers and Australians overseas.

 

The department provides foreign, trade and development policy advice to the Australian Government. DFAT also works with other Australian government agencies to drive coordination of Australia’s pursuit of global, regional and bilateral interests.

 

About the position

Under limited direction, the Senior Policy Research Officer analyses Taiwan’s political, economic and legislative news and information, and provides A‑based officers with reports, draft cables, and other written material.

 

The key responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:

  • Conduct research and policy analysis on Taiwan domestic affairs and human rights situation, Taiwan’s participation in international organisations and Taiwan’s foreign policy
  • Monitor Chinese-language press reports and monitor major political developments locally and internationally
  • Draft weekly news summary for Australian government internal audience
  • Write summary notes and reports, and occasionally assist with two-way interpreting, when accompanying A‑based officers to calls
  • Attend conferences and seminars as needed and prepare summaries
  • Represent the AO at policy briefings held by private think-tanks, chambers, universities and political parties
  • Drafts speeches, CVs, reports and other written material
  • Translate Chinese-language articles and correspondence
  • Prepare social media content on political and economic topics
  • Assist with the management of events targeting policy contacts
  • Assist to plan and prepare programs for visiting officials
  • Provide administrative support to the Section
  • Act in the position of Manager, Policy Unit during periods of absence and provide cover for colleagues working on economic and agricultural matters

 

Selection Criteria

  • Fluency in written and spoken English and Mandarin
  • Advanced degree in international relations, political science, economics, public administration or other relevant discipline; or equivalent work experience
  • Excellent research and analysis abilities as well as good communication and writing skills
  • Proven high-level judgement when identifying key issues in a complex political environment  
  • Demonstrated good time management, prioritisation, efficiency and self-direction
  • Good interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Program management skills
  • Ability to work with limited supervision in a cross-cultural environment.

 

CONDITIONS OF SERVICE

 

Normal working hours will be 0845 – 1715 Monday to Friday.  Occasional overtime may be required.  Salary will be NTD 1,100,538 per annum.  Other benefits include performance bonus, pension scheme and insurance.

 

Note: This is a locally engaged position.  There are no additional expatriate benefits available.  If the successful applicant is not a resident of Taiwan, the Australian Office will assist to apply for an appropriate working permit and Alien Resident Certificate.  Please note these processes can take up to two months.
