President Huang, Distinguished guests from Australia and Taiwan: It is my great pleasure to welcome all our guests here tonight to celebrate the significant educational and cultural exchanges between Australia and Taiwan in the area of new media art.
New Media Arts play an important role in both Australia and Taiwan. In Australia a recent study of digital content showed its value to the Australian economy was placed at 3.5% of GDP, or approximately NT$525 billion involving 300,000 jobs. While in Taiwan it is valued at NT$340 billion, and has grown at an average rate of 15% for the past three years. New Media Arts are key elements of digital content, therefore these exchanges make a valuable contribution to the development in this sector for both Australia and Taiwan.
Many of you are aware that the 2007 Taiwan and Australia New Media Arts Symposium and Exhibition were launched in the National Taiwan University of the Arts on Monday. I wish to acknowledge the joint efforts of the National Taiwan University of the Arts, The Australian National University and Griffith University in coordinating these exchanges, as well as the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Canberra and Australian Education International in Taipei for their commitment in making this possible.
I am particularly happy to see President Huang here. As a major driving force of these exchanges, no matter what hats he has been put on, he has never given up his love for Australia & Taiwan art exchanges. Dr Huang initiated the first large-scale cultural exchange project back in 1994, and the art exchanges between Australia and Taiwan have never stopped since then.
We all know that technology connects people across the borders, so do art and education. Both Australia and Taiwan share complementary strength in our economic success and technological ingenuity. Australia’s high-quality education is a great asset that Taiwanese people could utilise. I hope the symposium resulted in fruitful outcome, and the exhibition provides an excellent opportunity to showcase the talents of Australian and Taiwanese artists to many people in Taiwan, laying the good foundations for future collaborative projects between Australia and Taiwan in art, technology and industry.
In conclusion, I would like to thank you all for coming tonight and wish the symposium participants all the best with your future collaborations. I hope you enjoy the new media music proudly brought to you by outstanding Taiwanese musicians and the interactive new technology sponsored by EPSON. Thank you.
