Australian Citizenship

Registration of Australian Citizenship by Descent

Applications for registration of Australian Citizenship by Descent from applicants in Taiwan can be lodged at Australian Visa Services in Taipei. The information below will assist you to prepare an application for Australian Citizenship by Descent.

Application requirements

All documents provided must be originals. These will be returned to you.

If any of the supporting documents provided with the application are not in English, you must provide English translations completed by an accredited translation service.

The name appearing on the applicant’s Australian Citizenship Certificate will be exactly as it appears on their birth certificate.
 

1. Form 118 Application for registration of Australian citizenship by descent

Please check that Form 118 is completed correctly (including all declarations) and the form is signed and dated when you lodge the application. Please use the most current form available at www.immi.gov.au.

If you are registering more than one child as an Australian citizen by descent, an individual application form will need to be completed for each child. These applications should be lodged at the same time.

3. Supporting documents

• Evidence that at least one parent was an Australian citizen at time of the child’s birth. Evidence of Australian citizenship would usually be an Australian passport issued after 22 November 1984. As an alternative, if:
 


• Full household registration set including the child and the parents – if applicable. If both the child’s parents are not citizens of Taiwan then they may not have household registration.

• Child’s birth certificate. If the applicant does not also have a household registration document (see point above), then the original birth certificate must be notarised by a Notary Public. Notary Publics are usually located at the local district court.

• Copy of page from parent’s passport showing the signature of the parent who signed the application form.

• One passport photo of the applicant taken in the 6 months immediately prior to the application. This photo must be endorsed with “This is a true photograph of (applicant’s name in full).” by another Taiwan/Australian passport holder who works in the Proof of identity declaration - list of professions located in the information section of Form 118. This person must not be related to the applicant by birth, marriage or de facto relationship, and must have known the applicant for at least 1 year (except if the applicant is under 6 years of age). This person must also complete the ‘Proof of Identity’ section of Form 118 which is located in Part D.

• For applicants aged 18 years or over and who have lived outside Australia for a total period of 12 months or more since turning 18, a police certificate must be provided from all countries they have lived in for more than 3 months (except Australia). Information on how to obtain police certificates is available on the Department of Immigration and Citizenship website at Character and Penal Clearance Requirements.
