Health Requirements

If you are planning to visit or live in Australia, and are not an Australian citizen or permanent resident, you must meet certain health requirements before a visa can be granted. This means that you may be asked to undergo a health examination.

Do I need to undertake a health examination?

Temporary visa applicants
Health examinations will depend on your circumstances, your intended activities in Australia, and your country of origin or residence. You will need to undertake a health examination if:
• you are likely to enter a hospital or other health care environment, including nursing homes as either a patient, visitor, trainee or employee;
• you are likely to enter a classroom environment, including preschool, crèche and child care situations;
• you wish to remain in Australia for more than 3 months and you have resided in Taiwan for 3 or more consecutive months in the last 5 years;
• you are aged 70 years or older; or
• there are indications that you may not meet the health requirement.

For further information about health requirements for temporary entry to Australia please see Information Form 1163i (57KB PDF file).

Permanent visa applicants
For further information about the health requirement for permanent entry to Australia Please see Information Form 1071i (63KB PDF file).

Note: A successful health examination result does not mean that a visa will be granted. Costs associated with health examinations are the responsibility of the applicant.

Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) holders
ETA holders should note that a condition of their visa requires them to undertake a chest x-ray examination before commencing study in a classroom environment if this study will be for more than 4 weeks.

Applicants 70 years of age or older
If you are 70 years of age or older and are applying for a Tourist (subclass 676) or a Business Visitor (Short Stay) (subclass 456) visa you will need to undertake a specific medical examination.

You should take an 'Over 70s proforma' to your doctor or one of our Immigration Panel Doctors for completion. You can then return this form to your case officer or get your doctor to send it to the Australian Visa Services office.

This medical examination form for applicants who are 70 years of age or older can be obtained from one of the following locations:

To print the form from this website see Over 70s Proforma (113KB PDF file). The form is also available in Rich Text Format (rtf). See: Over 70s Proforma - Rich Text Format (134KB, .rtf file).

 When do I complete my health examination?

Paper Applications
If you wish to lodge a paper visa application at the Australian Visa Services office in Taipei and are required to undertake a medical and/or chest x-ray examination, please ensure that you complete your health examinations at least one week before you lodge your application. This helps to avoid delays with processing your visa application.

Internet Applications
If you wish to lodge a visa application online you must complete required medical examinations after you have lodged your application online. As part of the online application process you will need to either:
• download and print a referral letter to a Panel Doctor for online health processing (no paper forms are required to be completed); or
• download and print the required medical forms for manual health processing.

Where do I undertake my health examinations?

You must arrange your health examination with a panel doctor and/or radiologist nominated by the Australian Government. Examination reports by non-panel doctors/radiologists are usually not accepted. Please confirm with the hospital what you will need to take with you to your medical and/or x-ray examination when you make your appointment.
